Lighting can be considered a major component not only of composition but also as a means of controlling flow, ambiance, and depth.
Elinchrom portable flash was used on both images but in different ways. The flash lit solo lady looks artificially or unnaturally lit because it is. That doesn’t mean it’s right or wrong. Sometimes it comes down to a client’s narrative.
The image of the couple is lit quite powerfully with a flash source coming from an angle in front and slightly above them.
Whilst an artificial source is still evident, it blends a bit more naturally while giving a slightly surreal feeling and lots of 3D. The blacks have been weakened a little to give an old film feel.
