What is or isn’t an abstract is another subject that can court debates. Some say an abstract image shouldn’t be recognisable as something that can materially be categorised, i.e. it’s a part of a bike or a tree, etc.
That by its very abstract nature, it is indefinable, but no less evocative and creative. Others feel that it can be definable but captured in a less ordinary way, like a peculiar angle or as a recognisable segment of a common object, etc.
Reflections can be good examples of this. This image is holding reflections of nature onto the surface of water. Some might say it’s not a true abstract, but more an impressionist image of something we identify with.
Either way, it’s a creative and enjoyable genre to pursue. My advice is to look for light, patterns, shapes, forms, textures, and colour harmony. Or if ‘black and white’, how the tones coexist with one another to create balance.
Can it be soft via movement or the deliberate softening of focus? A most enjoyable day can be spent learning some of the nuances of abstract.
